New Relationship Goals: Joker x Harley Quinn

Scrolling around Facebook during a lazy Tuesday afternoon, I’ve come across youngsters who share pictures of Harley Quinn and The Joker on their walls. They caption these posts as their “Relationship Goals”. It’s actually disturbing if you think about it.

If you don’t have any idea about the background between The Joker and Harley Quinn, you would totally ship them. It’s the first time that The Joker was portrayed as a human who cares for another and Harley Quinn is really fun. She’s so cute to look at, like a walking breathing watercolor human. Usually, The Joker is portrayed as the crazy lunatic who is Batman’s greatest rival so the movie has been actually refreshing to see him not going after Batman.

But, what’s the real story behind The Joker and Harley Quinn?

I’m not a big Batman fan. I’ve watched the movies, and read a few comics but I was a kid who just enjoyed looking at the art (maybe that’s why I like looking at Harley LOL). What I know about The Joker (because my husband made me curious) was that he had a wife and he sucked at his comedy gigs. He got involved in a robbery and was chased by the Batman. During the chase, he accidentally fell into aΒ vat of Chemicals. This disfigurement drove him crazy. He blames Batman for it, I believe.

That’s how he met Harley Quinn, who was still known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel. She was a psychiatric intern at Arkham Asylum. She became fascinated with The Joker and asked her superiors if she could be the one to analyze and treat him. The Joker gained her sympathy and seduced her in the end. That’s why she helped him escape. She was imprisoned for the act, but managed to escape and become Harley Quinn. The Joker’s sidekick.

Here’s what Batman Wikia has to say about their relationship:

“Quinn’s relationship with the Joker is one of the most complex and twisted love affairs in comics: as with all people, the Joker is abusive and manipulative towards Harley, but, just as often, there’s evidence of camaraderie, playfulness, and genuine affection towards her. She’s the only person who’s managed to become intimate on such a long term basis with the Joker, who, in turn, displays occasional moments of confusion and discomfort which results in attempts to kill her.”

There was one time wherein The Joker was starting to realize that he had deep feelings for Harley but instead of treating her right, he sent her off in a rocket to die. It has been also said that he often beats her and verbally abuses her.

I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to be in a relationship like that. There are people though who say that the abusive relationship is mutual between them, but I don’t think so. There was a time wherein Harley recognizes that how The Joker asks towards her was abusive and she planned to kill him. I think this was after The Joker sent her off in a rocket to die. She was found by Poison Ivy and they team up together to take revenge on Batman and The Joker. It was only a “Sorry” from The Joker though that calmed down Harley and made her become his assistant again.

Point of this post is that they are both toxic and crazy. Still fun to look at and play around with though. πŸ™‚

Have you watched the movie? What did you think about it? ❀
